After another record sales year, Volvo Car Australia’s mission to go all-electric by 2026 is firmly on track – and 2024 marks the tipping point.
Electric vehicles made up more than a third of Volvo Car Australia’s record car sales in 2023. The arrival this year of the new EX30 small SUV will drive a significant boost, powering the business towards becoming an all electric vehicle company in Australia by 2026, four years ahead of Volvo’s global commitment.
At the current rate, 2024 looks set to mark a tipping point, where Volvo Car Australia sells more electric vehicles than combustion-engine vehicles.
Last year Volvo Car Australia sold 11,128 vehicles, more cars than ever before. For the second successive year Volvo’s multi award-winning XC40 clinched the No.1 spot in the small luxury SUV segment, with 5,837 sales.
The pure electric XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge made up 3,949 of total sales.
The imminent arrival of the EX30 small luxury SUV, Volvo Cars’ first model designed on its all-new electric vehicle architecture – and keenly priced from $59,990^ plus on road costs – is designed to bring electric mobility to the masses.
“By 2025 nearly 80 per cent of Volvo’s Australian sales will comprise of fully electric models. There is no long-term future for cars with an internal combustion engine. So, instead of investing in a shrinking business, we choose to invest in the future, which is fully electric,”
Meanwhile, the flagship pure electric EX90 seven-seater, on track to enter production in the second quarter of this year, will reset the bar for both luxury and safety – it reaches Volvo’s highest standard of safety ever.
Volvo Car Australia Managing Director, Stephen Connor, is backing the new EV line-up to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels.
“By 2025 nearly 80 per cent of Volvo’s Australian sales will comprise of fully electric models. There is no long-term future for cars with an internal combustion engine. So, instead of investing in a shrinking business, we choose to invest in the future, which is fully electric,” said Connor.
“The earlier deadline will allow us to meet the expectations of customers in
Australia and be a part of the solution when it comes to fighting climate change. Sustainability is as important as safety to us.”
This year, along with its retail partners, Volvo Car Australia is embarking on a major program to rollout ultra fast chargers across the retail estate.
