New year, new models: Volvo's hot new line-up for 2025

After a huge 2024, this year is set to be even bigger for Volvo Cars with new models raising the bar for safety, comfort and understated luxury.

EX90

Volvo Cars set a new global sales record in 2024 – and 2025 is another big year for Volvo and its customers, with a hatful of new models incoming – all packed with performance.

XC90: Big, better

For those requiring seven seat luxury, Volvo Cars’ update of its all-time best seller, the XC90, is set to arrive in the first half of the year.

With legendary seating comfort, improved suspension, an updated interior, a brand new infotainment system and enhanced safety technology to protect passengers and other road users better than ever before, the XC90 is the full package.

The mild hybrid (MHEV) B5 format uses a 48v lithium-ion battery and an integrated starter/generator to help reduce emissions and fuel consumption by up to 15 per cent in real-world driving.

The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) T8 version of the new XC90 has a battery range of up to 77km – almost double the average daily average driving distance in Australia. Which means the PHEV T8 can effectively act as an electric vehicle on most day-to-day drives. For longer journeys, the hybrid battery-engine combination can extend range beyond 800km.*

“I’m not sure we’ve ever come across a car that better caters to all occupants than the Volvo EX90. It combines the benefits of electric power with genuinely thoughtful cabin design. And electric power is the right thing for families,”

EX90: Different class

Arriving in Australia this year, the EX90 is what Volvo Cars global boss Jim Rowan calls “the safest car Volvo has ever built”. The seven adult seat all-electric flagship model defines a new era for EV luxury and safety. It’s packed with every available technological advancement. Lidar technology – like a radar system for the road – comes as standard to detect and react to objects and the environment outside the car. Inside, safe space technology and sensors focused on the driver help counter any distractions and mistakes – designed to keep everyone safer.

Hence Time Magazine recently named the Volvo EX90 Driver Understanding System the 2024 Best Invention in Automotive, recognising its innovation in safety and design.

The all-wheel drive EX90 also packs significant range for a large SUV: up to 570km on a single charge and can be charged from 10-80 per cent full in 35 minutes using a fast DC charger. It’s also rapid when required, covering 0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds via a 408hp power train harnessing instant torque.

These were some of the contributory factors in the Volvo EX90 being named Luxury Family Car of the Year at the 2024 TopGear.com Awards – though overall it was the complete package that judges said puts it ahead of would-be contenders.

“I’m not sure we’ve ever come across a car that better caters to all occupants than the Volvo EX90. It combines the benefits of electric power with genuinely thoughtful cabin design. And electric power is the right thing for families,” according to Top Gear’s Head of Car Testing, Ollie Marriage. “It’s easier to manage and the EX90 is so smooth, so quiet, so effortless that driving it doesn’t occupy you, making it easier to deal with any chaos going on in the back.”

ES90: Smooth operator

Like the EX90, the fully electric ES90 will also set a new benchmark in technological prowess – providing a top of the range luxury sedan for those seeking an alternative to the SUV.

Ahead of the launch in Stockholm, Sweden in March, the ES90’s key features are under wraps.

For now, it’s safe to say the ES90 will be in a class of its own.
