Creating a modern classic: Keep your Volvo rolling longer

A long-time Volvo customer couldn’t resist the elegant lines of 13-year-old C70 modern classic. So he bought it without even seeing the car. Here’s how it went.

C70

The Volvo C70 is a modern classic. A beautiful two door, four passenger convertible sports GT that in 1996 broke the ‘boxy’ mould. Volvo’s chief designer at the time, Peter Horbury, joked that Volvo Cars "kept the toy, and threw away the box!"

The last C70 rolled off the line in 2013. But it’s still a highly prized car given its ageless looks, understated luxury, comfort, build quality and punchy performance.

Which is why one long-time Volvo customer couldn’t resist a 2011 model with just 80,000kms on the clock – barely run in. The downside? No service history.

Plus, the car was based in Queensland, the customer in Sydney. But the seller was happy to allow a pre-purchase inspection by an authorised Volvo retailer.

“It’s a lovely car. I’m really pleased with it and for all the advice and the assistance from the Volvo dealer network. It’s a modern classic – I’m going to keep it running for years.”

“I had the car taken to the local Volvo Cars Service Centre. They did a thorough inspection and basically said it was a good car,” reports the buyer. “But it did need a couple of things doing.”

“So, I went ahead and bought the car, got it trucked down to Sydney and took it to my local Volvo Cars dealership, who did all the recommended repairs. That was a couple of months ago. But in conversation with the Service Manager, he said given the age – over 10 years – that I should replace the engine timing belt.”

“So I got that done, along with a full service, oil change and a plenum chamber and drain check.”

“It did have a service by a non-Volvo dealer earlier this year, but I wasn’t confident that they would have used genuine Volvo parts or been as thorough,” says the new C70 owner.

“Even though it is a 2011, I feel more confident driving it – because I know it has been maintained properly with genuine Volvo parts. The peace of mind is real!”

The upshot?

“It’s a lovely car. I’m really pleased with it and for all the advice and the assistance from the Volvo dealer network. It’s a modern classic – I’m going to keep it running for years.”
