The EX90 just passed its first media test with flying colours

A few weeks ago, automotive and tech media were invited to ride shotgun in our pre-production EX90. The overall first impression? A blend of practicality, safety and understated elegance.

Journalists and media professionals around the world were invited to an exclusive ride-along in our pre-production EX90.

Right in the middle of the Swedish woods at our Hällered Proving Ground, we gathered a group of excited journalists and media professionals from selected markets around the world, such as Germany, Sweden, the UK and the US.

During a few days in May they got to experience our new fully electric flagship SUV take on the heavy turns and rough conditions at the test track. It was an exclusive ride-along in our pre-production EX90 twin motor performance AWDs, with our experts, engineers and test drivers. And it seems to have left quite an impression.

As media reviews started to come in, it was clear as day that the EX90 had become the talk of the town.

The coverage resulted in over 118 articles and videos, spanning traditional media as well as YouTube, potentially reaching an audience of 28.3 million consumers.

To be a bit more specific, the EX90 is described as very quiet and comfortable, even at high speeds and on rough roads, yet offering impressive sporty driving characteristics. Many journalists were also impressed by its body control in sweeping corners and the Scandinavian design.

Judging by the coverage, the EX90 is considered by many to be a strong contender in the three-row electric SUV market, offering a blend of practicality, safety, and understated elegance. Let’s have a look at some of the best lines:

• In Germany, Auto Bild seems to agree with the saying that good things come to those who wait: “It may have taken a little longer, but Volvo's electric flagship EX90 is finally here. The first ride proves that the wait was worth it.” They describe the car as “large, dignified, Nordic and sober, yet wonderfully ‘mysig’ – this is what makes the EX90 a dream car.”

• “Weaving through some of the high-speed sections, the EX90 feels stable and controlled. While there is some roll and pitch, it’s never unstable or floaty, even as the tarmac drops from beneath us on more aggressive undulations,” writes Autoexpress in the UK.

TV2 Broom in Norway thinks that “the weight distribution is almost perfect: 50/50 front and rear” and that it “gives a very stable driving feeling.” We’re also happy to hear that they believe “Volvo comes with one of the very best-driving cars in its class.”

• In Sweden, Teknikens Värld writes that “the EX90 is a quiet ride, being electric and all, and it’s clear that comfort has been a guiding star.”

• Their Swedish colleagues at Dagens Industri feel "the EX90 is a luxurious, quiet and very comfortable family car.”

• “The EX90 stuck to the roadway with ease and proved quite nimble (…) was also easy to keep in the lane at high speeds, even in steeply banked corners,” writes Newsweek in the US.

• Also in the US, Car and driver concludes that “the first thing we notice riding in a pre-production version of the all-new electric Volvo EX90 three-row SUV is the silence.” They also appreciate that during acceleration, the EX90 does “not pipe in a soundtrack that mimics an internal-combustion engine, or a retro futuristic spaceship, or a turkey imitating a theremin.”

• “Straightforward and tastefully designed, with reduced control surfaces and clear lines. Comfortable seats, even in the second and third rows, contribute to the Scandinavian feel-good flair that has characterized large Volvos for decades,” writes Auto Motor Sport in Germany.

The reservations were few and far between, as our analysis shows 94 per cent of the articles and videos to be positive. All in all, the ride along and the subsequent media reviews were a testament to the hard work and dedication paying off in all areas of the car’s design and development.

We can’t wait to see what our customers will say about the EX90 when they hit the road in it later this year!
