The cooling system's purpose is to maintain the correct operating temperature for the engine. The surplus heat can be used to heat the passenger compartment.
It is normal for the engine's cooling fan to keep running for a while after turning the vehicle off.
Important
Check coolant level
The vehicle must only be used when the coolant level is at the correct level. If the level is too low, the engine might overheat and become damaged.
Signs of leakage
Avoid starting the vehicle if there are signs of leakage. This could damage the engine.
Signs of leakage include coolant under your vehicle, steaming coolant or needing to top off the coolant by more than 2 liters (approx. 2 U.S. quarts).
Engine overheating
Under certain conditions, your vehicle may overheat, such as driving in rocky terrain, hot weather or while towing a heavy load. This can limit the engine's power and impact other vehicle features temporarily. For example, the air conditioning may be disabled for a while.
If you see a message in the instrument panel regarding high temperature in the engine or transmission, or a low coolant level, follow the instructions in the message. You may need to refill the coolant or stop the vehicle to let it cool down.
After driving in demanding conditions for a longer period of time, do not turn the engine off immediately after stopping. Leave the engine idling for a few minutes to let it cool.
