Performing a factory reset of a pre-owned car
If the previous owner of your car hasn't removed their profiles and connected phones, a factory reset of the car is needed. You can do this yourself via the car's center display, but it is recommended to ask the previous owner to remove the car in the Volvo Cars app.
- See Performing a factory reset of a pre-owned car for more information.
Read about reinstalling and pairing the Volvo Cars app in a separate article.
Removing a car
Removing a car in the Volvo Cars app has different outcomes depending on what type of driver profile you're using.
- Admin/owner profiles1: When you remove a car from an admin or owner profile, all related data will be deleted from both the app and the car. This includes data linked to other connected drivers. A factory reset of the car will also be initiated automatically.
- Other driver profiles: If you're a connected driver with another profile type, removing a car will only remove your own app access to that car and your connected profile in the car. No other data or profiles will be affected.
Drivers with admin/owner profiles can click on Factory reset guide to perform a factory reset manually if it hasn't already been initiated automatically.
Note
Unpairing a phone from the vehicle
By unpairing a phone, you will remove the connection between your vehicle and the phone. You can unpair the phone either via the Volvo Cars app or via the vehicle's center display. Drivers with admin/owners profiles can view and unpair all phones connected with the car. Other users can only view and unpair their own phone.

Note
It is recommended to inform the new owner of the car to contact Volvo support or a Volvo dealer to report the change of ownership. This is important for registering the new owner in Volvo's systems and for them to receive the full offering of services. The subscription for connected services (previously called Volvo On Call subscription) will be active until it expires.
