Driving journal

The driving journal is used to automatically log all trips with your car. Driving journal is available for cars with Google built-in.

Cars with Google built-in

Driving Journal is an in-car app for cars with Google built-in1.

When enabled, the app automatically collects your car's vehicle identification number (VIN), location and other trip-related data, such as time, distance, fuel and electric consumption.

 Note

For fully electric cars, the driving journal calculates the electric consumption based on pure consumption during a trip. If you see a different value in your car's trip meter, it is because it also takes electric regeneration into account.

At the end of every trip, the information is uploaded to the cloud. The app also informs you if trips are not uploaded due to network issues or if a trip cannot be logged at all.

You can view all of your uploaded trips and manage them from the Px-2037-VOC app icon Car tab in the Volvo Cars app. The trips can be merged or deleted as well as marked as private or business. It is also possible to export the driving journal, which can be very useful when creating business expense reports.

Once a trip is sent to the cloud, the trip is stored for 400 days.

Technical requirements

  • The minimum required software version of the Volvo Cars app is 5.31.0 and the app needs to be paired with the car.
  • The minimum required software version of the in-car Driving Journal app is 1.4.3 or later.
  • Your car needs to be updated with software version 2.11 or later.
You can check your car's software version in the centre display.
Go to iCup-2037-Settings symbol.
Select System > Software update.
The current software version is displayed.

Getting started

Download the Driving Journal app from Google Play in the centre display. When Driving Journal is installed, you need to give the app permission to start logging your trips. This can be done via the centre display or the Volvo Cars app.

Via the centre display:
Go to iCup-2037-Settings symbol > Privacy > Volvo privacy settings.
Enable Driving Journal.
Via the Volvo Cars app:
Log in to the Volvo Cars app.
Ensure that the app is updated to the latest version.
Go to the Px-2037-VOC app icon Car tab.
Select Driving journal.
Enable the driving journal.

In general, it is recommended that you drive the car a short distance for the setting to take effect.

 Note

When the driving journal is enabled, all users that have paired their Volvo Cars app with the car can see the trips. If the driving journal is disabled, the car stops sending information about new trips.

Storage limits for unsent trips

Driving Journal saves all trips that could not be uploaded to the cloud. The current storage limit for these unsent trips is 10 MB or around 500 trips. Once the storage limit is reached, the oldest trip is deleted to make space for a new unsent trip.

Ending car ownership

When you end the ownership of your car in the Volvo Cars app, an automatic factory reset of the car takes place. During the reset, the data from the driving journal is deleted.

Troubleshooting

Trips might not be logged in the journal due to the following reasons:

  • Weak or no network connection: If there is a bad network connection, the trip data cannot be sent to the cloud.
  • Being unable to log: When the app is unable to receive GPS coordinates, the trip cannot be logged.
  • Not allowing location permissions: The Driving Journal app in the car uses background location, so location permissions must be allowed.
To allow location permissions:
In the centre display, go to iCup-2037-Settings symbol > Privacy > Show all apps > Driving Journal > Permissions > Location.
Select Allow all the time.
