Scandinavian winter adventures in Sälen

It’s no surprise Volvo cars have always been a common sight on the Swedish winter roads, since they’re the perfect companions for mountain adventures.

Sunrise over the winding winter roads. The sky glows, accentuating the contours of the beautiful snow white mountains. A fully electric, Volvo EX40 is packed with gear for a day of mountain adventures, seasonal food inspired by nature and a relaxing sauna.

This is Sälen, one of Sweden's best-loved mountain destinations. Its fame stems from the very first Vasalopp on March 19, 1922, that later became one of the oldest and biggest cross-country ski races in the world, sponsored by Volvo Cars. The resort’s first ski lift came into operation in 1949, and there are now hundreds of lifts and slopes, serving many thousand skiers every season.

But today, the area offers a lot more than skiing. There are restaurants, ranging from local and foraged Scandinavian food to Neapolitan pizza. Therapeutic dog sled rides through the snowbanks glistening in the sun. Climbing on rock or ice, rafting, hiking – and much more.

If you’re in the Sälen slopes these days, you’ll most likely come across one of the Volvo Camps, offering relax areas with barbecues, phone charging and activities for kids.

Not only have Volvo cars always been a common sight on Sälen winter roads, but the brand has also had a large presence in Sälen for quite some time. It all started with the freestyle Volvo Ski Team, who in the 1980s practiced in the slopes for their freestyle exhibitions, featuring flips of all kinds and ballet-like manoeuvres.

At the foot of the ski slope in Hundfjället, lunch is being prepared in one of Volvo Cars' barbecue areas. The embers are perfect for sausages. Music drifts from the speakers as the Volvo crew, dressed in weatherproof clothing, chop away ice, bring out outdoor games and stock up on everything needed to keep the fire alive.

Outside the slopes, Sälen visitors have a few more ways to interact with Volvo. Not only can you test drive one of our new electric car models at the showroom in the resort centre – you can even try them out on a real winter road.

The sun disappears behind the mountain tops. Outside, headlamps bobs along the cross-country tracks. Inside, the sauna is warm and fragrant of resinous wood.
