Engine cooling system
The cooling system's purpose is to maintain the correct operating temperature for the engine. The surplus heat can be used to heat the passenger compartment.
It is normal for the engine's cooling fan to keep running a while after turning the car off.
Important
Check coolant level
The car must only be used when the coolant level is at the correct level. If the level is too low, the engine might overheat and become damaged.
Signs of leakage
Avoid starting the car if there are signs of leakage. This could damage the engine.
Signs of leakage could be coolant under your car, steaming coolant or that you needed to refill more than 2 litres (approx. 2 US quarts).
Engine overheating
In some conditions, such as driving in rocky terrain, hot climate or with a heavy load, your car can overheat. This can limit the engine's power and impact other car features temporarily. For example, the air conditioning can be disabled for a while.
If you see a message in the driver display regarding high temperature in the engine or gearbox, or a low coolant level, follow the instructions in the message. You may need to refill the coolant or stop the car to let it cool down.
After driving in demanding conditions for a longer period of time, do not turn the engine off immediately after stopping. Leave the engine idling for a few minutes to let it cool.
