Swinging it at the 2024 Volvo China Open

In early May, the 29th edition of the prestigious Volvo China Open was held in Shenzhen, China, making an epic return to the DP World Tour.

The 29th edition of the Volvo China Open returned to Shenzhen, China in May, 2024.

Founded in 1995, Volvo China Open is China’s national golf championship and the longest-running men’s professional golf tournament in Mainland China. As a brand steeped in history and tradition, our ongoing support for the Volvo China Open is a natural fit. We not only founded this event almost 30 years ago, but also manage and champion it today.

After a five-year hiatus, this year marks the return of the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) to Mainland China.

During four exhilarating days of competition, the lineup featured over 100 European Tour elites and 37 China Tour champions, including renowned golf players such as Li Haotong from China and Sebastian Söderberg from Sweden, along with other domestic and international players.

Over time, Volvo China Open has become an integral part of who we are to our Chinese consumers.

In the end, Spain’s Adrian Otaegui took home the trophy with a cumulative score of eighteen under par. "As the first Spanish winner in the history of Volvo China Open, I'm extremely happy and excited. Thanks to Volvo for providing such a great platform,” Otaegui reflected.

A long and cherished history with golf

The Volvo brand has a long history with professional golf ever since the 1980s. The 29th Volvo China Open marks our 143rd sponsorship of a men's professional golf tournament, and our 91st European Tour event.

With exposure to both on-site attendees and online viewers of the event, we have a unique opportunity to showcase the connection between Volvo Cars and the Scandinavian lifestyle. This tends to resonate well with Chinese consumers who prioritise health, sustainability and quality living. Over time, Volvo China Open has become an integral part of who we are to our Chinese consumers.

Needless to say, a major international golf event like this naturally offers a great opportunity to showcase our premium Volvo cars. Our first ever fully electric premium MPV, the Volvo EM90, was the hero car on display at the event, offering the audience a chance to experience it up close. The EM90 also served in the fleet, providing commuting services for both guests and players. Test-drive models and a brand experience area were also available onsite for tournament attendees to explore.

Promoting sustainability in the heat of competition

Just like Volvo Cars, the Volvo China Open actively works to become more sustainable, inviting partners, the host golf club, sponsors and visitors to participate as well. This includes efforts in waste reduction, water and energy conservation, the elimination of single-use plastic bottles, and going paperless in the workplace during operations.

This year, the Volvo China Open went even further, partnering with the European Tour Group’s Green Drive Initiative to elevate its standards for sustainable management and practices.

Thank you to all the players and guests for making this year’s tournament another great success. We look forward to many more swings in the future!
