Electric cars with a backup plan

We want to create a confident and seamless transition to the fully electric future of driving. So, we designed our plug-in hybrids to offer enough electric range to power your daily commute and city driving.

Performance where it matters most

Our next-generation powertrains deliver powerful, responsive handling with smooth, quiet acceleration. The added capacity of a high-performance gas engine gives strong acceleration when you need it, thanks to 455 combined horsepower and a 0-60 MPH time as low as 4.3 seconds.

One pedal drive

Smoothly navigate stop-and-go traffic with one pedal drive. This lets you accelerate and brake just by applying and releasing pressure on the accelerator pedal. Your car will then convert the kinetic energy generated from braking into battery power.

Five modes to tailor your drive.*

Switch between drive modes at the touch of a button. The electric motor and gas engine are designed to work together in perfect harmony for seamless hybrid performance.

Pure

Electrify your everyday commute by driving in Pure mode. You’ll get a smoother, quieter drive with zero tailpipe emissions.

Hybrid

Settle into Hybrid mode, and your car will use both the electric motor and gas engine. Get top performance, electric range, fuel efficiency, and comfort without a second thought.

Power

Shift into Power mode for sporty driving with a faster acceleration response. The electric motor and gas engine work in combination for maximum performance and driving stability.

AWD

Engage AWD mode when driving in slippery conditions or towing a high payload to gain extra traction and stability. We’ve developed a more powerful rear electric motor and improved the AWD characteristics to give you more confidence on the road.

Off Road

Activate Off Road mode in challenging road conditions below 25 mph. This helps you stay in control by optimizing acceleration, steering, and transmission with locked AWD and Hill Descent Control. *Off Road drive mode only available on XC60 plug-in hybrid and XC90 plug-in hybrid.

Ready when you are

Schedule your plug-in hybrid to charge overnight so it’s ready for you in the morning. Our next-generation batteries can replenish their energy to 100 % in as little as five hours with our 3.7kW 1-phase onboard charger.*

Fits into your everyday life

Charge at home, at work or on a road trip. With over 160,000 charging stations across the United States,** it’s easier than ever to own a plug-in hybrid. Simply use the Volvo Cars app or Google Assistant to find a charging point location near you.

Charge on the go

Boost your battery range and fuel economy as you drive with regenerative braking. We’ve engineered our electric motors and energy-dense batteries so you can get an extra charge from the energy created and stored when you brake.

Smarter charging. Powering the everyday.

What do you want to know about Volvo plug-in hybrid cars?

What does PHEV stand for?

PHEV stands for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. Volvo offers a range of five plug-in hybrid vehicles, including SUVs, sedans, and wagons.

Do hybrid cars need to be charged?

Yes, all hybrid cars need to be charged. Mild hybrid cars, like the XC60 gas (mild hybrid) cannot be plugged in and rely on internal charging through regenerative braking, but plug-in hybrids like the XC60 plug-in hybrid, can be plugged in at electric charging points. Learn more about charging.

What do I need to charge a plug-in hybrid?

Our plug-in hybrid vehicles come with a charging cable which you can use to connect to a regular home outlet for lightweight charging duty (Level 1). While away from home, you can connect to the charging cables available at AC charging points and charging stations. Learn more about charging your Volvo.

Why are plug-in hybrids more expensive than mild hybrids?

Although the initial investment is greater, you’ll enjoy an extended range and better performance as part of the car’s value. Also, the ability to drive in Pure mode, or on pure electricity, will help you save money on fuel costs.

Is there a battery warranty?

For extra assurance, the warranty on the hybrid battery is extended to 8 years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first) under the Federal Emissions Warranty (10 years/150,000 miles for CA emission warranty states).

How long does it take to charge?

Charge times may vary, but the typical charge time is 5 hours from 0-100% on a 240V 16A charger. We recommend charging your car like you charge your phone, plugging it in every night to wake up with a full battery. Charging times will vary and are dependent on factors such as outdoor temperature, current battery temperature, charging equipment, battery condition and car condition.

Are there any other financial benefits?

You might be able to take advantage of local state incentives, depending on where you live. Visit your Volvo Cars retailer to learn more.

How does fuel consumption compare to other cars?

Using the XC90 plug-in hybrid as an example, the average driver would use about 360 fewer barrels of petroleum every year.*

* Results derived comparing MY24 XC90 plug-in hybrid to MY24 XC90 B5 engine. Visit fueleconomy.gov to learn more about fuel saving costs.

Are hybrid cars good for long distance driving?

Volvo plug-in hybrids are designed to travel long distances without you having to worry about the battery range. In fact, their total range is over 98 miles farther than our mild hybrids* and 23% greater than our regular engine vehicles.** Ranges for each model are as follows: XC90: up to 58 MPGe; XC60: up to 63 MPGe; S90: up to 66 MPGe; S60: up to 74 MPGe.

* Based on EPA data when comparing the MY24 XC90 T8 to MY24 XC90 B6 engine, range in additional plug-in hybrid models and variants compared to regular engine models and variants will vary and may be lower. ** Based on EPA data when comparing the MY24 XC90 T8 to MY24 XC90 B6 engine, percentage of increased range in additional plug-in hybrid models and variants compared to regular engine models and variants will vary and may be lower

What is the difference between mild hybrids, full hybrids, and plug-in hybrid cars?

Mild hybrid cars have a combined starter motor and electric generator that gently supports the gas engine to use fuel more efficiently, but they cannot run on electricity alone. They use the combined starter and generator for smooth take-offs and braking or slowing the car, while recovering brake energy to be stored in a small 48-volt battery. Full hybrid cars also generate battery power through regenerative braking, but they have a more powerful battery. So, they can run on pure electricity for short distances or in tandem with the gas engine. Our plug-in hybrid vehicles are designed with a considerably larger 400-volt battery and better performance with the added option of different driving modes. This means that the fully electric range is larger still and many drivers can operate their car on the electric motor alone. The plug-in hybrid battery is mainly charged with the included charging cable, or with an additional home wallbox or public AC changing point. But it can also be charged while driving through brake energy regeneration.

Do hybrid cars have a high towing capacity?

Volvo plug-in hybrids offer great towing capacity, especially thanks to efficient AWD. Maximum towing capacity depends on the model of your Volvo car.
