In 2025, Volvo Cars celebrates 70 years in the US, with the first Volvo car – the PV 444 – that was unloaded at a port in Long Beach, CA in 1955. Since then, Volvo has had an outsized impact in America, with a strong legacy of safety and commitment to invest in the future. On a human level, nearly everyone has a Volvo story. This year is not only a milestone for Volvo Cars – it’s an inflection point for the industry.
We have a long history of making cars and roads safer, with innovations like our 3-point safety belt that has protected countless lives, and can be found in almost every car today.
The introduction of our three-way catalytic converter with Lambda sensor was a breakthrough reducing harmful emissions by up to 90%. It was one of the most important inventions for controlling tailpipe emissions and remains an integral part of all modern gas-powered cars.
Our first U.S. plant in Berkeley County, South Carolina, is a 2.3 million sq. ft. facility, that provides jobs for over 2,000 local employees. And is home to the EX90 - designed to be our safest Volvo Car yet - assembled right here in the U.S.
